taliban_1The holy month of Muharram starts on Wednesday amid strong security threats of possible terror attempts for fuelling sectarian strife in the country, as the law enforcing agencies have been put on their toes to keep the things under control.

Well-placed police sources revealed they had
received intelligence reports indicating possible terror strikes at religious gatherings and processions during Muharram. Police sources quoting intelligence reports said foreign elements in neighbouring countries were backing local groups of extremists to disrupt harmony during the month.

The law enforcement agencies have been put on high-alert few days after the Lahore Police captured five terrorists of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

City police Chief Aslam Tareen also warned that elements in neighbouring Afghanistan and India are behind the recent spate of suicidal attacks at mosques and shrines as anti-Pakistan forces are hell-bent upon to fuel sectarian strife in the country.

“We have received an intelligence report about possible terror strikes at large-scale. We are planning security measures on war footing basis to ensure peace and tranquility during the holy month,” City police Chief said, when contacted.

According to our information, police chief said, the terrorists are planning different types of attacks at large-scale. “We have to take extraordinary steps to prevent such attempts,” Aslam Tareen added.

Top police officers are also trying to convince the Shia elders to cut down the time of scheduled religious gatherings in a bid to ensure foolproof security.

“Taliban are actually following an anti-Islamic agenda. The true face of Taliban has been exposed by their attacks on mosques, shrines and schools,” a religious leader said, seeking anonymity.

Quoting a recent statement of US envoy Richard Holbrook who acceded that terrorists are being funded by sources outside Pakistan, the moderate religious leader insisted, “This funding must be stopped.”

It is important to mention here that such steps are being taken following a police report disclosed that “terrorism is being exported to Pakistan from Afghanistan. About 50,000 individuals cross over to Pakistan illegally per day through porous border. Many amongst them are terrorists.”

Police officials say the security plan has been chalked out after the consultation with leaders belonging to various schools of thought and 184 potential trouble points had been identified in the city. The parking lots to be set up at a safe distance, preferably 200

meter away from venue of Majalis.

Meanwhile, thousands of policemen including senior officers would provide security cover to 4000 Majalis and 640 processions while armed personals would also be deputed to provide security to different programs to be held on daily basis.

Reportedly more than 2,000 police officials in plain clothes will also perform their duties around major and sensitive Majalis in order to keep vigil on the activities of terrorists.
