British newspaper "The Independent" reported yesterday that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and six current and former senior Israeli officials are in danger of being arrested if they go to Spain, after a Spanish judge issued what amounts to an arrest warrant for them.

Spanish judge issues arrest warrant for Israeli PM and Six Other. The order against Benjamin Netanyahu and six others relates to the fatal boarding of the Mavi Marmara.

The Independent cites the "Latin American Herald Tribune" as reporting that Spanish national court judge Jose de la Mata ordered the Spanish police and civil guard to notify him if Netanyahu and the six others enter the country.

The order was issued because of the possibility of the case against them in the affair of the Turkish ship the Mavi Marmara, which attempted to break Israel's blockade on Gaza Strip in 2010 as part of a flotilla.

Nine Turkish activists were killed when Israeli commandoes boarded the ship in order to enforce the blockade, and a tenth died later of his injuries.

"Besides Netanyahu, the Israelis named in the Spanish judge's order are former Minister of Defense Ehud Barak, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman, current Minister of Defense Moshe Ya'alon, former Shas party leader Eli Yishai, Benny Begin, and former Israel Navy Commander Eliezer Marom."

An Israeli inquiry found that the commandoes had acted properly in the face of violent resistance from those on board the Marmara.
Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Emmanuel Nachshon told "The Jerusalem Post", “We consider it to be a provocation. We are working with the Spanish authorities to get it cancelled. We hope it will be over soon.”
