Israeli barrierThe Israeli regime is pushing ahead with plans to build over 1,000 more settler units in the occupied West Bank in an attempt to pile more pressure on the newly-formed Palestinian unity government.

According to a report by the Israeli daily Jerusalem Post on Friday, the Tel Aviv regime recently decided to move forward with plans for the construction of 1,083 illegal settler homes in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Israeli media outlets had, on June 5, cited an announcement by the regime’s Housing Ministry regarding the release of new tenders for 1,500 new settlement units in a number of settlements on Palestinian lands.

Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas formed a national unity government on June 2 following an agreement to end years of rivalry. Angered by the unity pact between the rival Palestinian factions, the Tel Aviv regime suspended the so-called peace talks with the Palestinian Authority on April 24 and threatened to impose further sanctions against Palestinians.

On Thursday, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry called on the United Nations to pressure Tel Aviv into stopping its attempts to remove the Palestinian identity from the occupied territories.

Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, East al-Quds and the besieged Gaza Strip and are demanding that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories.

The illegal settlements have been built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.

Israeli settlements are considered illegal under international law. However, Tel Aviv is expanding projects on the occupied Palestinian territories, in defiance of international calls to halt the construction.
