The United States has charged six people with providing support to foreign militants joining al-Qaeda, al-Nusra Front and ISIL in Syria and Iraq, a report says.

The US Justice Department said on Friday the six supplied money and equipment including American military uniforms to foreign fighters, Reuters reported.

The equipment includes combat boots, tactical gear, military surplus goods and firearms accessories, said a federal grand jury indictment made public by the Justice Department.

They are originally from Bosnia who were living in Missouri, Illinois, and New York - five of whom were arrested in the US and the sixth one is currently in another country, the department said in a statement.

The defendants were identified as Ramiz Zijad Hodzic, 40; his wife, Sedina Unkic Hodzic, 35; and Armin Harcevic, 37, all of St. Louis County, Missouri; Nihad Rosic, 26, of Utica, New York; Mediha Medy Salkicevic, 34 of Schiller Park, Illinois; and Jasminka Ramic, 42, of Rockford, Illinois.

Ramiz Zijad Hodzic and Rosic also faced charges of plotting to murder and maim people in a foreign country.

"Today's charges and arrests underscore our resolve to identify, thwart, and hold accountable individuals within the United States who seek to provide material support to terrorists and terrorist organizations operating in Syria and Iraq," said Assistant Attorney General John Carlin.

The group used people in Turkey and Saudi Arabia as intermediaries to transfer the money and the equipment to fighters in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere.

Over the past two years, thousands of dollars have been transferred to buy equipment for an individual identified as Abdullah Ramo Pazara as well as other foreign fighters, the indictment said.

The indictment read that two of the defendants, in a message, discussed purchasing a night-vision optic with a built-in camera in order to film killings in the Middle East.

The accused also used telephones and social networking sites including Facebook to communicate messages, using fabricated names and code words including "Lions," "Bosnian brothers".
