Of the 25,811 people participating in the online poll, 17,277 or 67 percent said they consider Washington and ISIL allies in response to a question regarding their assessment of the US relations with the terrorist group. The poll was conducted from June 21 to July 15.

The opinion poll showed that merely 1,858 maintain that the two are enemies while 6,676 of the respondents said they think ISIL and the US are foes only when it comes to the former threatening the latter’s interests.

The respondents included, among others, 6,528 people from the United States, 2,180 from the United Kingdom, 1,708 from Canada, 582 from Australia and 390 from Germany.

The ISIL terrorists had received training from the CIA spy agency in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The terrorists currently control parts of Syria and Iraq.

They have committed heinous atrocities in both countries, including the mass execution and beheading of local residents and foreign nationals.

Since September 2014, the US along with some of its regional allies has been conducting airstrikes against what is said to be ISIL positions inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

The airstrikes in Syria are an extension of the US-led aerial campaign against the purported ISIL positions in Iraq, which started in August 2014.

Many of the countries joining the so-called anti-terror coalition, such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have been staunch supporters of the Takfiri elements operating against the Syrian government.

Earlier this year, the United States and Turkey inked an agreement to train and arm what they call "moderate" militants in Syria.
