The announcement was made via a Sunday statement released by the Israeli premier’s office following the first phone call between Netanyahu and Trump since his taking office on Friday.

"President Trump invited Prime Minister Netanyahu to come to Washington to meet him in February," read the statement.

While describing the conversation as "very warm," it added that the exact date for the meeting would be set over the next few days.

"The Prime Minister expressed his desire to work closely with President Trump to forge a common vision to advance peace and security in the region," it noted.

It added that Iran’s nuclear deal, the situation with Palestine, and other issues were also discussed during the call.

During a cabinet meeting held earlier in the day, Netanyahu voiced his opposition to the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia – plus Germany reached the nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in July 2015 and started to implement it on January 16, 2016.

Netanyahu said that stopping what he described as the “Iranian threat” and overturning the nuclear deal continues to be a key objective of Israel.

During his presidential campaign, Trump had promised to annul the deal which he referred to as a "disaster" and "the worst deal ever negotiated."
