Yemeni and Saudi forces engaged in heavy border clashes four days after the start of airstrikes by the Saudi-led army on Yemen.

The fierce clashes broke out in Jayzan and Sabieh region along Yemen's borders with Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi media reported that the country has deployed its forces at the borders with Yemen in anticipation of an imminent ground attack by the Yemeni troops in response to its airstrikes on the Muslim neighboring state.

Saudi Arabia has moved heavy military equipment to areas near its border with Yemen.

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said last week that Saudi Arabia has engaged in deploying military equipment, including artillery, to the border with Yemen.

Latest media reports said Washington has acquired intelligence about the Saudi buildup. One US government source described the size of the Saudi buildup on Yemen's border as “significant.”

The developments came as Saudi Defense Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud had reportedly been ordered to erect a military base immediately along the border in defiance of the treaties signed by the two states.

Yemen and Saudi Arabia signed a border pact in June 2000. The Yemeni revolutionary forces said that former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh had agreed to give Jayzan, Assir and Najran of Yemen to Saudi Arabia in lieu of receiving $18 billion.

The Saudi airstrikes against Yemen have killed, at least, 60 civilians since early Thursday.

Five Persian Gulf States -- Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait -- backed by the US have declared war on Yemen in a joint statement issued earlier Thursday.

Riyadh claimed that it has bombed the positions of the Ansarullah fighters and launched attacks against the Sana'a airport and the Dulaimi airbase.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is attacking Ansarullah positions, Saudi warplanes have flattened a number of homes near Sana’a international airport.
