Seventeen jawans have been killed in the attack on the rear office of the infantry battalion of the Indian Army at Uri, Baramulla in Indian-held Kashmir. Reports suggested that the attack started at 5:15 am on Sunday and after a round of intense firing, four attackers were neutralised, said the army spokesperson. This could well be the highest casualty suffered by the Indian Army in a single militant attack. People of Indian-held Kashmir have launched a new phase of their struggle to liberate their part of Kashmir from the Indian control.

Combing operations are currently underway in Uri and helicopters have been deployed to search areas close to the site. Indians claimed to have killed four attackers.
In the wake of Uri attack, Home Minister Rajnath Singh postponed his trip to United States and Russia. A high level security meet at Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence that began on 12:15 pm has ended. Senior MHA and MoD officials attended the meeting. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will visit Uri later today.
According to reports, security has been beefed up in Uri and the vital roads that connect the Northern Kashmir town to the Line of Control. The Army had reportedly sent three choppers from army’s 19 divisional headquarters in Baramulla to Uri. Para Commando troops had also been air-dropped into the area to fortify the response by the defence.
