One police officer has been killed in a bombing attack in the Shia town of Damistan, southwest of Bahrain’s capital, Manama.

The officer was “doing his duty” when the attack happened Monday night, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

The ministry refused to give further details about the incident but said that an investigation was underway.

Bahraini authorities have described the bombing as a “terrorist” attack, with Foreign Minister Khalid al-Khalifa claiming that Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah was behind it.

There has been no comment by the resistance movement in Lebanon on the Bahraini official claim yet.

Bahrain, which hosts the Fifth Fleet of the US Navy, has been witnessing anti-regime protests since 2011. Over the past four years, thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

Many Bahrainis have been tortured or killed and hundreds more injured and arrested during the regime’s ongoing crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.
