Bahrain’s security forces have summoned Shi’ite scholar Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Sadiq al-Maliki to a Manama police station where they arrested him.

Bahraini prosecutors announced that the reason for Hujjat al-Islam al-Maliki’s arrest and detention is still under investigation, but sources say the revered scholar’s arrest is due to his outspoken opposition to the Al Khalifah monarchy.

Hujjat al-Islam Abdul-Adhim Muhtadi-Bahrani, Hujjat al-Islam Muhammad-Ali al-Mahfudh (the secretary-general of the Islamic Action Society), Hujjat al-Islam Abdul-Jalil al-Miqdad, Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Adnan Musawi, Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Mohammad-Ali Alawi, Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Ahmad al-Majed and Hujjat al-Islam Jasem Damadistani are the most prominent scholars who have spoken up in opposition to the policies of the Al Khalifah regime and who have supported the Bahraini people’s ongoing popular uprising and have been arrested due to thier activities.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations on the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifah family to relinquish power.

Demonstrators are seeking the downfall of the Al Khalifah regime and establishment of a democratically-elected government.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others have been injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.
