Bahraini authorities prevented on Saturday (August 27, 2016) two human rights activists from leaving the country via the King Fahd Causeway that links Bahrain to Saudi Arabia.

Member of the European-Bahraini Organisation for Human Rights, activist Ahmad Al-Saffar, said that the authorities didn't allow him and activist Siham Al-Sayegh from leaving the island kingdom through the King Fahd Causeway, noting that the ban was issued by the Public Prosecution, according to a passports department employee.

The authorities have banned last June a number of rights defenders from leaving Bahrain, which coincided with the 32 session of the UN Human Rights Council held in Geneva. This move prompted criticism from the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, as well as Bahrain allies the United States and the United Kingdom.

In the past few days, Bahraini authorities tightened the grip on human rights defenders, as the 33rd session of the UN Human Rights Council to be held in Geneva. Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain stress that Manama is systematically imposing travel bans on activists.
