One tear gas canister per capita in Bahrain

ter gassAl Khalifa regime has purchased 1.6 million tear gas canisters, more than one round per capita, Al Mayadeen satellite television channel reports.

Bahrain’s Al Khalifa regime had earlier signed numerous contracts with companies from Germany, South Korea and

South Africa to purchase tear gas and other anti-protest ammunitions, Al Mayadeen added.

Despite concerns expressed by international communities and human rights organizations, Bahrain regime goes on with brutal crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations using tear gas and other toxic agents.

Meanwhile, claiming its pursuit of a political way out of crisis, regime has invited the opposition to participate in the so-called “national dialogues.”

Earlier Bahrain Human Rights Watch referred to the recently-released documents and disclosed that the Ministry of the Interior was to import 1,600,000 tear gas canisters and 90,000 tear gas grenades.
The Bahraini uprising began in mid-February 2011, when the people, inspired by the popular revolutions that toppled the dictators of Tunisia and Egypt, started holding massive anti-government demonstrations.
Several civilians have been killed and many wounded due to the use of tear gas as well as other toxic gases in residential areas by regime forces.
On September 9, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) that she was frustrated with reports of human rights violations by Al Khalifa regime in Bahrain.
