Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said here Wednesday in a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Elliason it is not right to confront the ISIS in Iraq and simultaneously strengthen it in Syria.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran favors the restoration of peace and stability in the region and is therefore basically opposed to terrorism and extremism,” said Zarif during the meeting.

The Iranian top diplomat said that cooperation and participation of every regional country, especially the southern states of the Persian Gulf, in the campaign against terrorism and extremism is a necessity, emphatically asking the UN to pursue that objective as a high priority.

The UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Elliason, too, for his part expressed deep regret over the large-scale loss of life and material destruction, especially the infrastructures, in Syria and Iraq, stressing that this grave problem can be solved only through collective regional cooperation.

He also stressed the necessity of continuation of constructive dialogue between the regional countries, particularly between Tehran and Riyadh.

The top UN official highlighting the imminent threat posed by the ISIS said that the interesting point is that the ISIS is regarded as a problem both in all regional counties and beyond.
