Thousands of Iranian people from all walks of life attended the burial processions of prominent cleric Ayatollah Abolqasem Khazali in the holy city of Mashhad, northeastern Iran, on Friday.

The processions began from Mashhad’s Shohada Square and continued to the holy shrine of Shiites' eighth Imam, Imam Reza (AS).

The top cleric was laid to rest beside the mausoleum of Imam Reza (AS).

Ayatollah Khazali died at the age of 90 on Wednesday. He was the secretary general of the Qadir International Foundation, a member of the Assembly of Experts, a former member of the Guardian Council, and a prominent teacher in the Qom Seminary.

Born in Iran’s western city of Boroujerd, he had also a role in drafting the Constitution of the Islamic Republic.

On Wednesday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei offered condolences over the death of Ayatollah Khazali, praising him as a “pious and prolific” scholar.

Imam Khamenei also lauded the deceased for his brave efforts during the oppressive circumstances before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, and assuming sensitive posts afterwards.
