Iraq’s prime minister says the country’s armed forces have cleared about 5,000 square kilometers of the Iraqi territory of the ISIL Takfiri militants.

Haider al-Abadi said in a statement that local volunteers have also contributed to the military achievement, al-Hadath TV reported.

The premier also stated that Iraqi forces have made major advances in the restive province of Anbar.

“Areas under the control of ISIL have shrunk and fighting against the group will continue until it is completely destroyed,” the Iraqi prime minister said, adding, “Our forces have had the upper hand for a long time and are in an offensive position.”

The trend of the battle against the Takfiris is in the benefit of the Iraqi nation, the Iraqi official said, adding that the plot by the terrorist group to sow discord among the people of Iraq has been foiled.

A senior US defense official, however, said ISIL “continues to make advances” in Anbar.

The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also commented on the crisis in the city of Fallujah, saying, “Iraqi security forces are struggling to retake territory.”

ISIL controls large areas of Syria’s east and north. The group sent its militants into Iraq in June, seizing large parts of land straddling the border between Syria and Iraq.

An Iraqi Kurdish official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Saturday that Iraqi soldiers, supported by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and local tribesmen, have driven the militants out of the entire town of Zumar in Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh.

On October 3, the Iraqi prime minister vowed that Iraqi forces will defeat the ISIL terrorists in the near future in light of more advances by the army backed by Sunni tribesman and Shia volunteer forces.
