Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem says Damascus and Moscow have agreed to back a UN proposal for the suspension of fighting in the northwestern city of Aleppo.

The Syrian official made the remarks after a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and a Syrian government delegation in Sochi, Russia, on Wednesday, official news agency SANA reported.

“Talks also dealt with the mission of UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, and the two sides had identical viewpoints on the need for supporting his efforts to freeze the situation in Aleppo,” Muallem added.

On October 30, the UN envoy proposed an action plan for areas where Syrian forces are fighting Takfiri terrorists, and said the proposal includes “freeze zones” in Syria to allow deliveries of humanitarian aid, starting with the country’s largest city, Aleppo.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on November 10 expressed his readiness to study the UN initiative, saying it is necessary to work on the new proposal in order to bring back security to the city.

Aleppo has been one of the main areas hit by fierce fighting between the government forces and foreign-backed militants.

Muallem further added that the talks also dealt with “the situation in the region and the conspiracy against Syria that became well-known to all, by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey.”

Meanwhile, Syrian al-Watan newspaper reported on Thursday that the Sochi meeting “laid the initial vision for a political solution to the Syrian crisis that would bring together several Syrian patriotic sides,” adding that the process would “require time to materialize.”

Earlier this year, two rounds of UN-brokered negotiations on Syria held in Switzerland ended without agreement.
