The Qatari minister told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the recent nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 countries has cleared the way for working with Iran on other issues, including challenges threatening the region.

“We should have a serious dialogue with our neighbor, the Iranians, and ... lay down our concerns from both sides, and solve them together. Iran is our neighbor in the region. We have to live together,” Attiyah said.

The Qatari foreign minister suggested that the nuclear agreement requires deeper engagement with Iran.

He also said that a “firm agreement between the major players and Iran" was the best way to resolve issues surrounding the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.

On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 countries – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – finalized the text of an agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in the Austrian capital of Vienna.

Under the JCPOA, limits are put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for a set of commitments by the P5+1, including the removal of all economic and financial sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Speaking for the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council, Attiyah said on Monday that the breakthrough in the talks was the best option available to the Western standoff with Iran over Tehran's nuclear program.

Attiyah made the remarks after a ministerial meeting of the six-nation bloc in the Qatari capital, Doha, which also attended by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Kerry said that fellow foreign ministers in the bloc, which comprises Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait, have all agreed that once fully implemented, the accord could contribute to the security of the Middle East region.
